Real tempura batter does not use cornstarch at all, so the recipe you found on the back of that cornstarch box is fraudulent. This recipe should be relabeled "cornstarch batter".

Because I was using fresh sweet bread, I let it dry out some and I substituted heavy cream for the milk. I use heavy cream and egg yolks when I make French toast because it creates a custard and keeps the bread from getting too soggy. I also added chopped pecans instead of raisins, because I prefer nuts to raisins. I’m still waiting on the finished bread, pudding, but it looks and smells amazing so far!
