This is the closest recipe I've found to the way I was taught to make goulash. Except my grandmother used cayenne pepper instead of chili flakes and more sugar. So it tasted a little too sweet initially, then the heat hit. And it was called "smackintackle" (at least that is how it sounded.). I never knew where the recipe came from.
